Matson attended Santa Clara University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Commerce. While attending Santa Clara’s Business school, Matson was the first student ever to be accepted into the Santa Clara University Law School’s Early Start Program. As a senior in college, Matson finished his required undergraduate courses and attended Santa Clara University’s Law School.

After successfully completing his first year of Law School at Santa Clara while he was a senior in college, Matson transferred to the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law where he graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. Matson performed legal services for the Santa Clara Superior Court, provided pro bono legal services for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, served as a Summer Associate at a firm in Honolulu, and served as a federal court extern for the Honorable Federal Magistrate Judge Leslie Kobayashi. Finally, Matson served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Honolulu before entering private practice.
